ATP - Christophe Rochus v James Blake
24 June 2008

The older one of Rochus' brothers, eventhough he's slowly entering the third decade of his life, is playing just like at the beginning of his career. In the past couple of months, he's recorded a few finals and titles in challengers played mostly on clay. However, the reality is such that Christophe will never become something more than a typical challenger and futures player. Last year he hasn't even participated in Wimbledon, but it's interesting that he only once managed to pass the first round of this Grand Slam, and it was back in 2000. when he reached the 2nd round. This short Belgian is playing quite differently on faster surfaces and it could be said he has almost no chances at all during the exchange of points because most of his shots are weak and inaccurate, he's got a tendency to make lots of UEs and when he's facing a little more serious opponent - he stops using even the smallest bit of quality he possesses.
And that more serious opponent that will await him on the other side of Wimbledon's net today will be James Blake himself. Most of you probably know that Blake isn't just a great player but also a great man that has lived through a lot of things and keeps giving so much back to the community through various foundations and associations. Blake is one quite attacking-oriented tennis player, who is terrific from the baseline with the main feature being his strong forehand. He is really able to make that transition from defense to offense quite smoothly and that's when he's the most dangerous.
Why do I believe in 'Mighty James' easy victory here? This is actually quite a simple bet. Well, firstly, it is clear that Blake is a more complete and serious player; then, he played many more competitive matches on grass this season than his opponent (semis of Halle whereas Rochus only played 3 matches in Wimbledon qualies, not very convincingly and against very bad players); and the key, Christophe has almost no serve at all whereas Blake is simply serving bombs and is a killer in that tennis aspect. Moreover, Blake is a fantastic returner, and soft Rochus' serves should be a piece of cake for him. On top of it all, we also have an ancient H2H that is 2-0 in Blake's favor and when I take all of this into account I really don't see how can Rochus avoid a heavy defeat here.
