WTA - Santangelo v Anne Keothavong
Value bet of the day. I really don't get such odds. Errani has reached the best rankings (53.) of her career not even a month ago which is a clear sign of a huge progress she's been making this season. Her favorite surface is clay and she beat many strong players on it this year. She defeated Kirilenko, Szavay, Peng, then Bondarenko in Fed Cup while playing for the Italian national team, and she caused lots of trouble to Serena Williams, Azarenka, Cornet... She also caused plenty of trouble to Davenport losing to her after three tough sets, she beat a very 'unpleasant' Parmentier and talented Krajicek (who's been struggling a lot this year to tell the truth) and that was all on hard. So I really don't know where does all the space for such underestimation of the 21-yr old Italian coming from. I've watched her play couple of times so far, she's got a game for all surfaces, moving well out on the court and got a razor double-handed backhand which she successfully uses to compete against many top players, not to mention how it would work out versus Keothavong.
The Brit is currently the number one female tennis player in her country but that doesn't really mean much considering the low-quality level of female tennis there. She also uses double-handed backhand quite often, but she is pretty poor during the exchange of shots and could be said that she's almost got no serve at all. Her only advantage her will be that she's already played couple of tournies on grass this season, she got to the finals of Surbiton where she lost to number 80 in the world, New Zealand tennis star Marina Erakovic. Besides that match, she hasn't met anyone ranked better than 135th position on her road to that final. At her second grass tournament, she only showed up as 'a tourist' because she had a big misfortune to meet Kateryna Bondarenko in the first round and lose easily.
If we consider better preparations that Keothavong had on grass this year as to why Anne is set as such a dog here, I really cannot find another solid reason why she is being favored so much in this clash. We could possibly take into account their only mutual duel played in Kolkata last year on carpet, which Keothavong managed to win 6/4 6/4. However, Errani is playing some phenomenal tennis and since I don't think she had any bigger injuries or other problems as of lately, I'm gonna trust her here and place a bet on her win with high stakes.
The odds are really amazing and I think that the bookies could easily regret it cause Errani is undoubtedly the more stable of the two, and I would personally give her the slight advantage in quality and all other tennis aspects.
Good luck to all.
