Poker - WSOP v Special Bet
I believe that most of the readers of this tip also play poker and probably are aware that, in this following month, we will have the WSOP, World Series Of Poker, the biggest meeting of all poker players around the world. Here we have all the best pro players, all the best amateur players, fighting for the glory in 55 events, most of them No-Limit Holdem, but also the World Championships of Omaha, 5 card draw, Limit Holdem, Shootout, HORSE and, the magic, Main Event, that normally gathers thousands of players and generate a prize pool of 8, 9, 10 milions of dollars.
The WSOP is, today, not only the heaven of poker players, but also a enormous markting plataform. Most of the, well, all of the normal online poker rooms have all kinds of satellites to the WSOP. It was never so easy to a commom player to go to Las Vegas and play the WSOP.
WSOP grew a lot with internet. What was an elite encounter between the best poker players is not a multi-national, multi-cultural mix between professional and amateurs, young and old people, from Vietname or Portugal, that go after a dream and fly to Vegas to breath the WSOP spirit.
It's not a surprise to see that the last players to win the Main Event of WSOP were amateurs. The biggest example is Moneymaker, a guy who with 40$ got a satellite seat in the Main Event and beat thousands of players to win 2.5 milions dollars [beating Fahra in the Heads Up, one of my favourite players :( ].
However, of course that the professional and elite players still win many bracelets (the symbol of winning a event of the WSOP); Hellmuth, Ivey still win a bracelet almost every year.
So, after this introduction, what is this tip all about? I won't bet in Phil Ivey to win WSOP, don't worry :P I bet that nobody will win 2 bracelets (or more) in this WSOP. This didn't happen in the last two editions where, in both, one player won two bracelets. In 2006 and 2007, also four players made eight cashes during the WSOP and, for example, Hellmuth and Madsen, in 2006 made 4 final tables each.
I believe that this year, nobody will win two bracelets. One of the biggest reasons is because of everything i talked above; the poker is getting international, is a game that everyone can play, WSOP is getting every day even more open to all players. The events are having more and more players, with more and more quality. Eager, ambitious players.
To give you an example: i quite follow the portuguese poker comunity, for obvious reasons, since i am portuguese. Two years ago, i *think* nobody went to the Main Event. Last year, four or five players did managed to play it. This year, Betfair, Everest Poker, Paradise Poker, Unibet, etc all sponsored several of the best portuguese poker players and gave them a ticket to, not only the Main Event, but other tournaments of the WSOP. Portugal passed from 0 players in the WSOP, to 4, to 10/20/30 almost. And good players.
Poker has also a big component of luck, and luck can influence everything in a tournament.
Also, we are already in the event 19/20. Looking to the final results of the previous 18 events, i only see Erick Lindgreen, Mike Matusow, Jason Young as potencial double bracelet winners. Matusow won a tournament with more than a 1000 players ... Quite hard to repeat it :P
Important factor is that if a player goes until, imagine, the final table of a tournament, that means that he will probably miss one, two, three events that will start in the between.
Finally, EPT, WPT, APT, LAPT, or European Poker Tour, World Poker Tour, etc. are giving to regular medium players the chance to getting more experience playing in major tournaments. That is a clear boost of quality to play in a WSOP.
So, because of the grewing number of poker players, that go to WSOP, with quality and experience; the fact that the events are having more and more players daily; the fact that we are almost in the half of the WSOP and nobody still won two times and, of course, winning a bracelet is not easy, two is really hard :P i go for it.
The odds are 1.70 in betfair, at the moment of this bet. I will try to search for better odds or other rooms that have this bet or similar.
Good luck and to all that will play the WSOP, please don't win twice :D
