Mardy Fish has achieved his biggest success in his career this year by beating world number one (it's the biggest success for every mediocre player to do that I'd say) and reach the finals of Indian Wells Masters, where he got defeated by Djokovic in three sets. Mardy has been very unfortunate throughout his tennis career with all the injuries that kept him away from the tour from quite a while and kind of stagnated his progress. Now it seems like his full potential has been used up on all the recoveries and it doesn't seem that he will ever be able to do something really big on the tennis scene. Fish is an awesome server, yesterday, in one very equal match versus Guccione he recorded 16 aces managing to win in a tight affair at the end. In the first round of Queens, in one quite relaxing match for him against French Roger-Vasselin, he 'aced' 12 times during the match. Based on that, it could be concluded that he is serving at his best right now. The bookies have probably used that fact as the main reason to once again publish the very same games total they had the last time these two played each other.
Andy Roddick is, one could say, a typical American tennis player featuring a mighty serve, great forehand, but at the same time, very limited technically and relying much more on his physical strength than his intellectual abilities. In other words, it's obvious he hasn't been fully educated tennis-wise. If he was, he'd probably be sitting on the number one rank for a while now. Regardless of that, he's one of the most successful American tennis players lately, and he will enter the match vs. Mardy Fish as a favorite, same as in their previous 9 encounters. Andy also had quite a few injury problems this year: first, a back injury, then he skipped Roland Garros due to shoulder injury. It is well-known that he is one of the players that hates playing on clay so he actually used this recovery period to fully prepare for the faster surfaces, who fit the best server in the world the most. In the match against Robby Ginepri at this tournament he lost the first set in a TB but he won the next two sets both 6/1. I should mention that he never faced a single break point for the opponent in that match and as soon as he warmed up a bit, he gave a quick tennis lesson to his countryman.
One of the interesting things in every match between Fish and A-Rod is that they are truly great friends. Most of you probably know that Mardy moved in with Roddick's family for his senior year of high school, just so he can attend the same elite school as Andy did. I think that in these two guys' matches, it always seems that Fish is entering the matches with too much respect for Andy, and usually plays below his level. Of course, in their 9 mutual clashes, last 8 were won by Roddick. IMO, Andy will again 'kill' (the) Fish with his powerful serves, but also with his great baseline game. Problems for Fish will start the moment his first serve fails to deliver because the rest of his repertoire of shots can barely be characterized as average. Considering the fact that these two players know each other really well, I think that Roddick will use every little chance that his opponent will give him and break Mardy early in every of the sets for an easy triumph.
In their previous match about a month ago, the odds and the total were literally identical. I expect the result to be the same as well.
