ATP - Denis Gremelmayr v Benjamin Becker
If there was a prize for the most improved player of the season, my vote would go for Gremelmayr. The German player was also an average player, capable of performing well in all-surfaces, but he has stepped it up this season, showing an amazing tennis and a great fighting spirit. Gremelmayr's great defensive game will be his main weapon to frustrate an inconsistent Becker. Gremelmayr hasn't played on grass since 2005, but he has done quite well in indoor tournaments along the years (defeated Querrey in San Jose this season) and playing on a fast surface like grass shouldn't be a problem for him at all. Gremelmayr is 7-0 against fellow German players in the past twelve months and he has won the last two tournaments he has played in Germany (one on clay, the other one on carpet).
Benjamin Becker may look on paper as a strong grass courter, but he has just gone 3-3 on the surface last season, including a loss against Anthony Dupuis, who was at the time the number 345 of the world. Becker also clearly feels the pressure of playing at home, as he has just won 2 of his last 10 matches on Germany. Becker is lacking any kind of confidence right now, being defeated by players out by players outside Top 200 in challengers played on hardcourt, his favorite surface and that's not a good sign when you're to face Gremelmayr, who will also play at home and with his ability of making amazing shots will put the crowd on his side.
I don't see any differences in terms of quality to play on grass between these two players, so the only big difference is just that Gremelmayr is on his best moment of his career, while Becker is watching his career going nowhere. Gremelmayr should never be the underdog in here and he should end up making Becker self-destroying today. Take Gremelmayr to win in here. Regular Play.
