ATP - Roger Federer v Gael Monfils
Ok, it's semi finals time. This means it's time for Federer to step it up and get to the final as fast as he can. Federer has been playing extremely well and against a first set where a red hot Gonzalez simply was untouchable, Federer changed his game style and won the three following sets by 6:2 6:3 6:4. The Swiss is hitting his forehand extremely well and he looks to be playing his best ever on Roland Garros. Will that be enough to finally get the title in here? That's something he will find out next Sunday. But for now Federer will face Monfils, who is the type of player who has literally nothing to hurt Federer. The Swiss player is serving well and it won't a passive Monfils, who is playing meters behind the baseline, which will put him pressure on his strokes today. To cause problems to Federer, you need to put pressure on his backhand, something Monfils won't be capable of doing, by just trying to return the max balls back, playing a very passive game, just waiting for Federer's errors, who without being pressured, simply doesn't miss his shots and goes to the net to finish the point quickly. The Swiss player like to get his job as quick as he can on Grand Slam semi finals and some amazing results like 6-4 6-0 6-2 against Roddick in the semi final of AO'07 or 6-2 6-0 6-2 against Bjorkman in Wimbledon'06 clearly show that.
Gael Monfils had an amazing tournament, but he doesn't stand a chance against Federer and he knows that. And when Monfils knows he can't win a match, he simply can't get nothing on his game working well, as he needs a lot of adrenaline, in order to play his best tennis. That's the main reason why he has never won a set against Federer and Nadal. When he doesn't believe, he simply underperforms and against players who would anyway be superior to him in any circumstance, things only get worse for the French player. Not even the crowd can help him, as if there is non-French player the RG crowd loves it's Federer, thanks to his offensive game and the desire of the French crowd to see an offensive player win Roland Garros, after 25 wins since Yannick Noah won the tournament, with a serve & volley game style.
The difference of quality between these two players is simply huge and Monfils will just be too tired to compete at his best level, after playing 20 sets in this tournament, while Federer has just played 17 sets and much quicker ones than Monfils played. The French player has been progressing in the tournament, thanks to the unforced errors his opponents has been committing against him, but Federer simply doesn't commit errors against passive baseliners like Monfils, which can't put any pressure on his backhand. I expect something like a Federer win by 6:4 6:1 6:2 in here. Take Federer minus the games. Regular Play.
