ATP - Florent Serra v Robby Ginepri
Florent Serra was lucky in the first round, as he faced a lucky loser, instead of Richard Gasquet, but since that he has been playing very well and that's the main reason why he is on a third round of a Grand Slam for the first time on his career. Serra defeated Giraldo in the first round in straight sets and then just dropped one set to beat Hanescu in the second round, a former quarter finalist in here. If Serra has the talent to play well on clay, also the noisy crowd supporting him also helps and the fact that he is going to play on Court 1 will help him a lot. This is one of the courts where the noise of the crowd is louder and it's not a coincidence that yesterday on this very same court, Chardy defeated Tursunov in straight sets and Benneteau was capable of coming back against Falla, getting the win in the 5th set. Serra moves well around the court and he should like to play on clay, against someone with no patience for long baseline rallies like Ginepri.
Robby Ginepri has been the major surprise of this tournament until now, as he was known to be one of worst players of the Top 100 on clay. But in fact he defeated Igor Andreev in the second round, but even though the Russian player is a world class clay courter, he doesn't have much patience on court neither and he can destroy himself pretty quickly. The same doesn't happen with Serra, who is a patient player and will obligate Ginepri to commit a lot of errors, as the baseline rallies will be long, until Ginepri will end up taking risks in order to try to finish the points, as long as possible. The American player isn't exactly a mentally tough player and with the noisy crowd cheering his opponent, he can easily starting destroying himself, something that has happened an huge number of times on matches played on clay before.
Even though I agree this match will be close, I don't think Serra should be the underdog in here. Ginepri may have improved on clay, but Serra plays at home and Ginepri is yet to beat a player in here with a good defensive game like the one Serra possesses. France has already three players on the fourth round in the men's draw and in my opinion, he is going to get a fourth one after this match. Take Serra to win in here.
