ATP - Radek Stepanek v Tommy Robredo
Radek Stepanek is probably on his best form ever and even on clay, he has been extremely good this season. First of all, he has become the third man to beat Federer on clay in the last three seasons, by defeating the number one in the world by 7:6 7:6 in the quarter finals of Rome. The Czech player has a great serve and besides a good baseline game, he likes to go to the net to finish the points, when he has the chances to do it, with his world class volleys. Stepanek played extremely well on his first two matches in here, by defeating Gilles Simon (who was coming from a win in Casablanca) in straight sets in the first set and then Jiri Vanek in the second round by 6:1 6:0 6:7 6:3. He served extremely well in both matches and he was only broken once in this tournament until now.
Tommy Robredo is in the third round, but honestly he is far from the level he had in the last couple of seasons. He took an injury time-out against Gicquel and his latest defeats on clay against Karlovic and Roddick show that Robredo will struggling against good servers even on clay. The Spanish player also lost this season against Ljubicic, Mahut, Fish, Calleri and... Stepanek, all of them good servers and capable of putting pressure on Robredo's weak second serve. Robredo has won the first five matches against Stepanek, but the fact the Czech player defeated him on hardcourt by 6:4 6:2 already in this season may be a sign that a new era has arrived in the matches between these two players.
Stepanek has nothing to lose and when he is in great shape, like right now, he is simply one of the best players in the world. Robredo has been struggling this season and he is far from the level that it took him to be a Top 5 player. The Spanish player may have a tremendous record in this tournament, but Stepanek is the type of player who isn't afraid of good players and he actually plays better against the best players in the world. Take him to win in here and to go to the fourth round of this tournament.
