ATP - Fernando Verdasco v Mikhail Youzhny
Fernando Verdasco is the type of player who in a good day can beat almost anybody on a claycourter. His forehand is one of the best in the circuit (Roddick even says it's the best) and even though he had to play nine sets to reach this round, at least he comes with a decent preparation for today, as Ventura and Chela are very good clay courters and Verdasco needed to play well, in order to beat them. Before this tournament, Verdasco also reached quarter finals in Hamburg, where in the first round he defeated Youzhny by 6:3 6:2. He also defeated David Ferrer in that tournament by 7:6 6:2. The Spanish player reached fourth round in here last season, with a tremendous performance in his third round match against David Ferrer, where he literally killed his friend with forehand winners all over the place. Now he comes with confidence for this match and especially with his game tested by some good opposition in the previous rounds.
Mikhail Youzhny had a short clay season, thanks to an injury that he got in Monte Carlo and he only came back in Hamburg, where he lost to Fernando Verdasco in the first round, showing no rhythm on his game at all. Then he played in Düsseldorf, where after defeating Starace, he got slaughtered by Ferrer (6:3 6:3) and Soderling (6:3 6:1), showing once again that he is far from his best level and when he faces good opposition, he simply can't follow the high rhythm that his opponents put in the game. And even though this make look good for him, it was terrible for Youzhny that he got such an easy draw in the previous two rounds in here. Benjamin Becker was one of the worst players on clay in the draw and Maximo Gonzalez is only used to play on challengers and not on Grand Slam second round matches. Youzhny wasn't tested and once again, he will face a tough opponent, without being tested before. Even though he may play better than in Hamburg, Verdasco seems to be on a roll now and trying to make the Spanish Olympic team, something where he is putting a lot of his effort right now.
Youzhny has a very good backhand, but clearly it needs rhythm to be actually a weapon and not the main reason why Youzhny destructs himself a lot of times. Verdasco is playing very well right now and he will dominate the baseline rallies, by hitting a lot of forehand winners. Youzhny never got the chance to put some rhythm on his game in this clay season and now he is going to pay the price of that against Verdasco. Take the Spanish player to win in here. Regular Play.
