ATP - Florent Serra v Victor Hanescu
Florent Serra has never make it to a third round of a Grand Slam before, but if he doesn't reach it in this tournament, most likely he will never reach it on his career. Serra defeated the lucky loser Santiago Giraldo in the first round by 6:4 6:3 6:2 last Monday, finishing the match just minutes before the rain started again and delayed most of first round matches to just yesterday. So he had two days to prepare for this match, which was very good for him. But what it was really good for him was to watch Hanescu and Sela going to 5 sets yesterday, meaning that Hanescu had no days to rest between his first and second round matches and he needed five sets to beat Sela, who got injured at the middle of the 4th set. Serra is in good shape right now and last week in Casablanca he almost defeated Gilles Simon in the first round of the tournament. Remember that Simon ended up winning the tournament. Serra also reached semi finals in Estoril and Tunis, showing that he is slowly coming back to the form which took him to the Top 50 in 2006.
Victor Hanescu is a former quarter finalist in here, but that was before his injury lay-off. Since he came back to the circuit, he never regained the form which allowed him to be such a strong clay courter and he is actually just 2-4 on clay this season. Hanescu got lucky as Sela got injured, when the Israeli was leading the match by 6:4 2:6 6:4 2:1. The Romanian player isn't used to play such an huge amount of tennis and especially on back to back days. He won't have any time to rest, while Serra had two days of rest between matches. Also Serra's game is a bad matchup for Hanescu and the Romanian will struggle today even to win a single set, let alone the match.
Serra has his best chance ever to reach a third round on a Grand Slam today. Hanescu isn't the player he once was and he won't have any kind of rest between matches, while coming from a battle of almost three hours and an half against Sela. Serra plays at home and with the help of the crowd, he should have more than enough game to beat a tired Hanescu. Take Serra minus the games in here. Regular play.
