ATP - Tommy Robredo v Marc Gicquel
Tommy Robredo had a terrible beginning of season, but in his first round match in here against Coria, he clearly showed that he is getting closer to the level, which put him in the Top 5 during the 2006 season. Robredo was capable of outplaying Coria, who played his best match in years and showed why he is one of the most consistent players in this tournament ever! Robredo's worst result in this tournament was a third round in 2002! Besides that he reached fourth round in 2001, 2004, 2006 and quarter finals in 2003, 2005, 2007. This clearly shows how Robredo loves this tournament and how he is capable to step it up on the big one. Once again it looks he is doing that again and he is clearly one of the players who will most likely still be in this tournament next week.
Marc Gicquel isn't exactly a clay courter and even though he can have some nice results on this surface against some reasonable players, he clearly can't handle world class clay courters, like Robredo. Gicquel doesn't have enough patience to handle long baseline rallies against consistent baseliners and he showed that last week by losing against Gilles Simon by 6:3 6:2 in the semi finals of Casablanca. Gicquel had to finish his match against Troicki just yesterday because of the rain, while Robredo finished his first round match last Monday, which gives another edge to the Spanish player in this match.
Robredo is the type of player who can be consistent during the whole game and when he faces someone weaker than him on clay, he just outplays his opponent and beats him quite easily and quickly. Also the fact that Gicquel won the last match between these two players (although it was in indoors) will make Robredo take this match more seriously and he will also try to get revenge, as that match that he lost in Lyon last season was one of the main reasons why he didn't make it to Shanghai last season. Take Robredo minus the games in here. Regular play.
