ATP - Jurgen Melzer v Marcos Daniel
Jurgen Melzer is actually in his worst position in the rankings in a long time, but he is still a very talented player, capable of having some good results at the highest level, especially when the draw helps him, like in here. Melzer easily defeated Luczak in the first round by 6:3 6:2 6:4 and even though clay isn't exactly his best surface, he showed once again that he can play on it by playing very well in his first match in here. Melzer is coming from a good performance at home last week in Poertschach, where he reached quarter finals and this result clearly gave him confidence to play in here close to his best level, which is clearly Top 50 material. He served 12 aces against Luczak in the first round and won 71% of the points played on his serve, showing that he is serving quite well, a clear sign that he is confident on himself right now.
Marcos Daniel will be his opponent today and he has only reached the second round in here, thanks to the retirement of Juan Carlos Ferrero, when the Brazilian was trailing by 6:7 2:2 in the match. Daniel had never won a single match on Grand Slam level, which shows how weak he is at his level and his game doesn't have a single weapon but expect his opponent to self-destruct. Melzer is an aggressive player and commits a lot of errors, but he also hits a lot of winners and unless his confidence suddenly disappears, he should have no problems in beating Daniel, whose defeats on clay at the hands of Tursunov and Patience clearly shows that he doesn't belong on a Grand Slam 2nd round, not even in Roland Garros, which is played on his favorite surface.
Melzer is clearly the most talented of the two and he has actually regained almost all his confidence on his game in the past two weeks. Daniel has nothing to counter Melzer's aggressive game and unless the Austrian player hits an unbelievable number of errors today, he will easily advance to the third round in here, where he may have a shot to advance to the fourth round of a Grand Slam for the first time on his career. Take Melzer minus the games in here. Super Play.
