Ingolstadt suprisingly axed coach Jürgen Press on New Year's Day - only 3 points behind a promotion spot. A few days later the executive committee declared former Bayern Munich player Thorsten Fink as the successor. Fink came from Red Bull Salzburg, where he was assistant coach of Giovanni Trappatoni.

He has the ambitious goal to promote with the team to 2. Bundesliga and with regards to the league reformation next season, he said that it will never be so easy again for clubs from the Southern division to get in 2. Bundesliga.
