Bucuresti vs Rostov Don
In the first game in the EHF Women's Champions League, CSM Bucharest will host Rostov Don. Both these teams are are the first endeavour in the EHF Champions League groups stage and after massive investments in both sides last summer one of them will go all the way to the final 4 in Budapest. The favorite of course is Rostov, Jan Leslie's team. The russians have won their group in the main round, are the only unbeaten side in the tournament but they beneficiated by a slightly more friendly draw without having to face until now the likes of Buducnost, Gyor or Vardar, the strongest teams in Europe at the moment. Still they where very dominant with Larvik, Ferencvarosi, HCM Baia Mare or Fleury Loiret.
Rostov has a world class team with Lunde one of the best goalkeepers in the history of the sport, outstading wingers, the ukraininans Managarova and Borshchenko and one one of the most sought after playmakers in world handball, Ilina.
CSM bucarest on the other hand even though looks impessive on paper has some major issues to deal with. They are way too thin at the 9 meter line, much rests on the shoulders of the ever reliable Isabelle Gullden; Line Jorgensen their only left handed right back has missed since the WCh and even though she will feature today after such a long hiatus she really lack match fitness so she cannot play 60 minutes, also the versatile brazilian Rodrigues will miss todays game, and Bradeanu, Torstensson, Masson, or Martin had to battle with niggles in the previous days/weeks. They are really, really thin at the 9 meter line, that was apparent in the main round stage and I doubt they will find scoring easier this time against a good defence. CSM's only trump card is their defence, Rasmussen emphasized this at the press conference preceding this match, with a very good goalkeeping duo Grubisic-Masson and agressive and thight defence.
Given Bucharest's lack of options at the 9 meter line I think they will struggle to score more than 20-22. A low scoring game also is advantageous for the romanians with respect to the away goal rule. Rostov will have to face it's toughest defence yet, they will find scoring harder too for sure and even though they are slight favorites aI doubt they will score more than 24-25 also.
